During the 2026 Delaware Educators Rising State Leadership Conference, leadership was not only demonstrated in planning and on stage, it was proven in a moment that mattered most.
When a medical emergency occurred on site, Carter Porter and Joshua Soto, students engaged in Delaware’s Health Sciences pathways and active members of HOSA (Career & Technical Student Organization), immediately stepped into action. Drawing on their clinical training, emergency response preparation, and CTSO competition experience, they provided calm, coordinated, and professional support until the arrival of the University of Delaware Emergency Medical Services.
The students assessed the situation, helped stabilize the individual, communicated clearly with emergency responders, and ensured that care was transferred efficiently and accurately. Their ability to remain composed under pressure, while demonstrating skills, reflected the very competencies Delaware’s Career & Technical Education system is designed to cultivate: technical skill, teamwork, ethical responsibility, and leadership.
This moment underscored the power of experiential learning. Through rigorous Health Sciences coursework and HOSA competitive preparation, Carter and Joshua were not simply learning about emergency response, they were prepared to execute it.
Their actions serve as a powerful reminder: Delaware students are not only career-ready, they are community-ready.
